What is your identity?

How reliable is the concept of identity in a digital world? If some kind of visual obstruction can be created, a person can masquerade as another person online for a long time. During this prolonged time period, relationships can be formed with an identity that does not truly exist. What recourse can be taken when a person is discovered to have created real relationships within a fake context?
